In this module, we’re going to dive deeper into the Yoast SEO for WordPress plugin. And in this video we’re going to see all the locations where you can find elements of the Yoast SEO plugin. And the first one we’re going to look at is the WordPress dashboard. So if you’re the WordPress dashboard, you can see the Yoast SEO posts overview meta box at the bottom and there are three elements to it. First of all, you have the published posts SEO scores, which is subdivided into three separate categories. And these categories are called “needs improvement” “good” and “OK”. And this is very convenient because it allows you to see the category, for example “needs improvement”, if you click that, you get an overview of all the posts which have bad SEO scores so you can very quickly see which posts you need to optimize for.
The second element is called the indexability check by Ryte and this simply gives you feedback on whether your homepage can be put into the search results by the search engines. So this is useful for a quick check. And the third column is simply an overview of the latest blog posts on yoast.com. Now, there’s a second location in which you can find the Yoast SEO plugin and it’s called the posts overview.
So if you click “Posts” you can see all the posts you have and there are elements of Yoast SEO in here as well. On the right you can see four columns (that is if you have the Premium version – otherwise you have three) and the first column is the number of internal links in that particular post. And you need to have a good internal linking structure – which we’re going to go to come back to later – and this gives you an overview of how you’re doing on that part.
The second column is only available in Premium and it shows you the number of internal links linking TO this post so all the other posts on your sites linking to that post. The third one shows the SEO score, which in this case is green for the top one and red for the middle one. And the fourth one shows you the readability score. So here you have an overview of all your posts and the SEO scores and the internal links. You can see at the top two additional things: “orphaned content” (note that this is a Premium feature as well and you won’t see it if you’re using the free plugin) and “cornerstone content”. We’re going to come back to cornerstone content but just quickly it’s – cornerstone content means it’s the most important posts on your site and you can see here and select here the cornerstone content articles to make sure that you’re doing well on the most important parts of your site.
Orphaned content is content on your site which is not linked to, so which is not part of your internal linking structure and you should really avoid that so if you click the orphaned content one you can make sure that you link to this post from other posts to make sure that your SEO internal linking strategy is in order. Now, there is one more thing we can do here which is to click the “screen options” option and if you do that you can show the SEO title, the meta description and the focus keyword on this page.
So let’s do that. If you click those, you can see some additional information. If we click a post we’ll see that there is a lot of Yoast SEO going on there as well. There’s two important parts in the block editor where you can see Yoast SEO. First of all, there’s the metabox at the bottom of your post. And then there is the Yoast SEO sidebar. So the sidebar and the metabox basically do the same things.
The metabox has some more functionalities, but the first tab – as you can see here – the “content optimization tab” is completely available here as well. And the advantage of that is that you can work on your post on the left and optimize it at the same time, on the right. So let’s go through the headings you see here. If you click the snippet preview, you can actually see a preview of what your search results may look like in Google if you do it like this. And you can edit some things, to make sure it looks different.
We’ll come back to that later in this course. The second one is a readability analysis. The readability analysis basically gives you feedback on the readability of your text. The third one, is where you enter your focus keyphrase. So the focus keyphrase of this article is email marketing and we’ll give you feedback on whether you’re optimizing well for that. Then, there’s the option of adding related keyphrases.
This is a Premium feature, so if you want to optimize for other terms as well, you can add an additional keyphrase here, and you’ll receive feedback, much the same as you’ll receive it for the focus keyphrase. The next heading allows you to mark this piece as cornerstone content. So, if your piece is very important, you can mark it as cornerstone content and the analysis will be a bit stricter. Under that you’ll see the internal linking suggestions, which is basically a list of articles, which it might be good to link to, because they are related to each other. So, if you want to improve your internal linking, you can see here what you need to do. And we’ll come back to internal linking later in this course as well. Below that, there is another Premium feature, which is called Insights, and it shows you the most prominent words in your article and as you can see here, this article, actually the focus keyphrase is the word combination which is used most often in this article so that’s a good sign.
You can use Insights to see whether you’re optimizing your text well and whether your text actually has the focus you want it to have. Now, there are a couple of things which are present in the Yoast SEO metabox under the post, which are not present in the sidebar. So, there is the social tab, and in the social tab you can basically see what your post may look like when shared on social media, like Facebook and Twitter. And you can do a couple of things as well here. Then there’s the Advanced tab, which we’ll come back to later, and if you have extensions installed, like Local SEO or News SEO, you can see additional tabs right here.
Now you may have noticed at the top of the page a Yoast logo as well and what you can do here is quickly navigate to some convenient tools, for example the configuration wizard, which allows you to configure your plugin settings, and there’s some tools to help with keyword research as well and your SEO settings. Another important part is located in your user settings. You can change roles and there’s an SEO editor role and an SEO manager role which allows you to make sure that the right people have the correct rights. So you can manage that here. Now the last thing which is important are the Yoast SEO settings and all of these settings warrant a complete module, so we’re going to go into that later in this course. .
