Welcome to WPBeginner and thank you for watching. In today’s video, I’ll show you how to add a featured content slider in WordPress. To get this on your site, we’ll first install and activate the soliloquy plugin. Note: you’re going to need Soliloquy developer license to get this feature. You’ll see this warning at the top so make sure that you verify your license key. Next we want to click on addons tab.
And we’ll scroll down to find the featured content addon. I’m going to click install and then I’ll click activate. You also might want to activate the Themes addon and this will give you several premade designs for your slider. Now that I have all the addons and plugins actived, we’ll create a new slider to do that I’ll go to Soliloquy–>Add New from here you’ll see an option for featured content.
We’ll choose that one. Now we need to fill out the fields for the posts, we can choose our taxonomy terms. That means you can choose which categories you want to use. I’ll leave that blank. Here you can either select specific posts to show in the slider or leave it blank to bring all of them in. And here I can choose to include sticky posts and if this is enabled any post that is a sticky will be at the beginning of the slider. I can sort by date, and if this is a news type site that’s a good choice.
If you don’t care the order, then maybe random would work best for you. For order, I’ll choose descending so it will show the most recent posts first. And I’ll choose 5 for the number of slides to bring in for post offest, this means that I want to start all posts in the criteria so if I enter say 5 here, it will skip the first 5 posts and start with the 6th one. I’ll leave that 0 because I want them all to be included. I only want to show published posts so I’ll leave that. link image to post url, I’m going to click that because I do want someone to go to the post if they click on the image.
And I do want to display each post title on the slider and I want users to be taken to the post if they click on the link so I’ll check that as well. Here I can decide if I want any content to be displayed or if I just want an excerpt that might be enticing for them to click on it. I’ll choose post excerpt. And I’ll add a read more link after the excerpt that says continue reading. Now the fallback image will be used if a post doesn’t have an image itself.
It can be something like your site’s logo or something generic. You’ll wan to add the url that the image can be found here. To find the image url open up a new tab on your media library, click on the image that you want to add and copy the link from the image. Then we can go back to the soliloquy setup and paste that here. Under config we can further adjust the settings.
Here we can choose the slider theme, the dimensions, transition, the amount of time between each slide transition, the speed of the transition when moving from one slide to the next, and the slider position. Slider gutter is the space between the slider and your content. Do you want this on mobile, if so, what do you want your mobile image dimensions to be. Should we autostart it, show arrows, control navigation, show pause/play controls, pause on hover.
Do we want to loop the slider, randomize it. Here you can enable keyboard navigation. You can also enable hardware accelerated transitions via css, or allow the slider to adapt to slides with different slides. You can enable image cropping here and choose a slider delay this will delay if you have set to autostart. And down here you can choose which slide to start on.
Now that I’ve made all my adjustments, we’ll click publish. You can either add the slider by the shortcode that you find here or by adding the template tag to your theme file. I have a static front page so I’ll add the shortcode to my page. And you can see what it looks like on my test site. Since each theme is different, you’ll definitely want to play with the themes and how your site is set up and to get the optimized look and feel of your featured content slider.
